Title : A quantitative green chemistry evaluator for a sustainable future

Abstract:

MilliporeSigma, the Life Science business of Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany, developed and launched DOZN™2.0 in 2017—a distinctive web-based greener alternative scoring matrix, also known as a quantitative green chemistry evaluator. Built on the 12 principles of green chemistry, DOZN™2.0 provides customers with a structured framework to learn about green chemistry and to design or improve materials, products, processes, and systems. The tool scores products by applying metrics aligned with each principle and then aggregates those scores to produce a final composite score, enabling a clear comparison of relative greenness across offerings. DOZN™2.0 derives its scores from manufacturing inputs and data such as Globally Hormonized System (GHS)and Safety Data Sheet (SDS) information, delivering a green score for each substance and enabling informed decision-making throughout the product lifecycle. Its flexible architecture allows DOZN™2.0 to accommodate the diverse portfolio of products across the organization, ensuring relevance across different chemistries and applications. To uphold rigor and reliability, the DOZN™2.0 system has been verified and validated by a third party, ensuring that best practices are consistently applied. Responding to customer feedback, we upgraded the platform to DOZN™3.0, launched in December 2024. The upgraded system empowers users to calculate the green scores of both their processes and products, providing richer data to drive sustainability improvements. DOZN™3.0 remains a free, web-based tool that equips users with enhanced data while maintaining a strong focus on data privacy, allowing customers to score their processes and products securely and with confidence. This evolution reflects our ongoing commitment to transparency, innovation, and responsible chemistry.
