A sort of connection between ions and molecules and metal ions is called chelation. A polydentate ligand and a single central metal atom create or have two or more distinct coordinate bonds as a result. These ligands are also known as chelators, sequestering agents, chelants, or chelating agents. They are often organic molecules, however this is not always the case, as demonstrated by the use of zinc in Wilson's disease patients as a maintenance treatment to stop copper absorption. Applications for chelation include the provision of nutritional supplements, the removal of dangerous metals from the body through chelation therapy, the use of contrast agents in MRI scanning, manufacturing using homogeneous catalysts, the removal of metals from water using chemical processes, and more.
